Switch the laptop off for a good night's sleep

THE Herald reports on the findings of the Prince's Trust that one-third of Scotland's young suffer from insomnia ("Youngsterssuffering insomnia", December 29).

It is widely known that lack of sleep is believed to be one ofthe triggers for depression, anxiety and stress.

The fact that internet activity - especially on social networkingwebsites such as Facebook - is a known stimulant which maycontribute to that lack of sleep

Given that the majority of young people spend most of their timeon Facebook or texting via their mobile phones, and much of it isfrom the comfort of their beds, perhaps a simple answer would be inthe removal of phones or laptops from bedrooms during the night, soproviding a more restful and healthy night's sleep.

And if you are tempted to try this strategy with your offspring,do expect objections - big ones - for Facebooking can be addictive.
